Leading Students In a Hyper-connected World
Richard Byrne - Free Technology for Teachers
From phones to tablets to televisions, today’s students are more connected to the world than ever before. With a few keystrokes and a click students can discover new information and challenge more old information. What does this mean for our roles as teachers? And how do we lead students to become conscientious consumers and producers of information? In this keynote Richard Byrne will offer some answers to those questions and challenge you to find new ways of leading students in a hyper-connected world.
Richard is a former high school social studies teacher who taught for eight and a half years at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in South Paris, ME. He piloted 1:1 laptop use before the program went school-wide and coordinated a "laptop squad" to support teachers' use of laptops in their classrooms. Richard’s work is focused on sharing free web-based resources that educators can use to enhance their students’ learning experiences. He has been invited to speak at events all over North America, Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Richard is a five time winner of the Edublogs Award for Best Resource Sharing Blog. He became a Google Certified Teacher in 2009 and in 2012 received a Merlot Classics award from the chancellor’s office of California State University. In 2010 he was a finalist for ACTEM’s (Association of Computer Teachers and Educators in Maine) educator of the year award. Tech & Learning Magazine named him one of their “people to watch” in their 100@30 30th Anniversary celebration. On a daily basis his blog, Free Technology for Teachers, reaches a subscriber base of more than 60,000 educators.
